He might be a trifle stuffy when we first lay eye’s on him during the opening episode of season 1, but it appears that Pogo, Hargreeves’ incredible talking chimp, was quite the icon himself back in the day.

Long before The Umbrella Academy was ever truly a thing, Reginald Hargreeves dreamed of putting a monkey into orbit. That money was Pogo, a particularly cute but regular monkey. When Pogo is almost killed, Hargreeves treats him with a super serum that not only heals him but also gives him cognitive abilities way beyond his species understanding.

We can only assume that this is the same serum, or a version of it, that Reginald gives to Luther years later, although in Number 1’s case, it makes him less human and more ape-like.

Anyway, during the episode “Öga for Öga”, we see a candy bar drop out of a vending machine. The name of this sweet? “Pogos-Gogos”. This indicates that the gentlemanly ape was actually something of a pop culture icon himself in his youth, presumably because he’s been into space and, as far as we can tell, is the only talking monkey in the world. Not a mind blowing easter egg, but a fun one nonetheless.
