Towards the end of Miracle Day, we are lucky enough to get an entire episode focused around Jack's past - Immortal Sins, and it is easily the standout highlight of Torchwood's final run. Arriving in New York in the 1920s to hunt for a parasitic worm, Jack forges a close relationship with a Angelo Colasanto, an Italian immigrant who moves to the big apple in search of a bigger purpose.

After becoming romantically entangled, Jack opens up to Angelo about his work with Torchwood and travels with the Doctor. An excited Angelo decides he would love to join Jack in his adventures and Jack lets him tag along as his companion. Angelo is amazed by this strange, alien world and it’s great to watch Jack finally have own companion of his own. Their chemistry alone would have been enough to hold up a spin off.

Though their mission to destroy the parasite is successful, it isn’t long before everything goes very wrong and Jack is shot in the head whilst trying to scale a chain link fence as the duo try to flee the scene. Angelo looks on, helpless and horrified as he is arrested and thrown into a van, moments before Jack revives.

When Angelo finally walks free from jail a year later, Jack is waiting for him, and takes him back to their room, but we can tell something is eating away at Angelo. As the two are in bed, Angelo stabs Jack multiple times, convinced that he is being seduced by the devil due to Jack’s inability to die.

Angelo tells the landlord what he has done, and about Jack’s resurrections, and before long, Jack is chained up in front of a jeering crowd, who savagely beat him and slash him to death every time he revives. Watching something this brutal happen to our main protagonist, especially at the hands of someone we were beginning to trust, is heartbreaking, especially after getting a glimpse of how happy the two could have been.

The cherry on the cake is that Angelo is appalled by what has done and eventually rescues Jack, hoping to continue their relationship and adventures. Jack, traumatised by the incident, declined, throwing himself off the roof of a building to escape and leaving Angelo alone with his guilt forever.
