10 Soul Crushing Torchwood Moments That Left Us Traumatised

6. Vera And The Category Ones Are Burnt Alive - Miracle Day: The Categories Of Life

Throughout its run, Torchwood heavily explores the idea that joining the team is a death sentence, and that no one ever survives working for Torchwood forever. In the case of Vera Juarez, however, this is taken to an extreme, as she is murdered in horrific fashion on her very first assignment - just hours after first being dubbed a Torchwood member, which has to be an all-time record.

Juarez, a capable surgeon, gives us a boots on the ground view of the catastrophic impact that The Miracle has on the medical industry, and in the first half of the series we spend a lot of time with her. After joining the Torchwood team, she volunteers to investigate one of the many pop-up ‘overflow camps’ that are appearing over the world.

Whilst there, she discovers that living people are being labelled as ‘category ones’, meaning they have been pronounced dead. After threatening to publicly reveal this information, she is shot by Colin Maloney, the man in charge of the camp (who might be the creepiest villain in the Whoniverse). As she is unable to die, she is thrown into a shipping container where we discover what happens to the category ones: they are incinerated alive, forced to endure every moment of agony.

Rex tries to save her, but is too late, as she meets her grisly end along with a group of category ones and he is forced to watch his love interest burn. This is certainly the most physically disturbing moment of the series, if not the most emotional.
