While two archangels search out the brothers, Sam and Dean find themselves in a different predicament: held captive by a council of pagan gods who seek to use them for their own benefit. In this episode we’re treated to what seems like your basic business meeting, only between deities ranging from Greek and Norse mythology to Hinduism and even Haitian voodoo. We’re also treated to a fan-favorite archangel masquerading as the Viking trickster, Loki, while claiming to be in “witness protection.”

What’s especially interesting about this episode is the interplay between religious beliefs. The pagan gods have gathered to discuss what they fully identify as the “Judeo-Christian apocalypse,” and how they can survive it. This forms a metaphor for the impact of the planet’s dominant religion on those religions which are less powerful. When the gods claim to not be afraid of the angels, the one among them says about his rebellious brother, “he should scare the crap out of you! He is going to use you all for fingerpaint!”

When Lucifer finally arrives, having been tipped off by a skittish Hermes, he does exactly that, leaving a dark reminder of the brutal power of mythology’s nastier elements. Amid this chaos, the brothers barely escape
