5. Fat Tony
It may come as a surprise that Fat Tony, real name Marion Anthony D'Amico, didn't meet his maker in the typical mobster way. Nope. Instead of swimming with the fishes, the leader of Springfield's underground actually popped his clogs following a heart attack, brought on by the ultimate betrayal.
Originally appearing in 1991, Fat Tony became a popular reoccurring character throughout the years, making the decision to kill him off a rather shocking one. The way the writers chose to do it was probably even more of a shock.
Fat Tony's end came half way through season 22 in the episode "Donnie Fatso". In it, Homer becomes an undercover informant for the FBI, and becomes incredibly close with Tony. Upon learning of his new confidant's true identity, Tony is so shocked that his heart gives up on him, killing him on the spot.
In typical The Simpsons fashion, Tony is replaced by his cousin 'Fit' Tony, who quickly puts on tons of weight due to the stress of the job and ends up looking - and sounding - exactly like the late mob boss, begging the question: why kill off Fat Tony in the first place?
