10 Things Non-Fans Don't Understand About Buffy The Vampire Slayer

7. The Characters Are Outstanding

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Mutant Enemy

The best way to hook your audience is by writing nuanced, likeable, and distinctive protagonists. And with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there’s no shortage of characters who fit this description.

The four central heroes – Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles – all stand out in their own unique way. Their journeys are full of loss, heartbreak, guilt, frustration, confusion, and – most importantly – growth. They all change significantly over the course of the show.

Yet these four individuals are merely the heart of a much larger web of terrific characters. Angel, Spike, and Faith, for instance, switch between heroism and villainy depending on which episode you’re watching, which makes all three of them fascinating to watch.

The ever-evolving Scooby Gang also keeps things interesting. Cordelia, Oz, Anya, and Tara are just some of the characters who join up with our central heroes and add their own personalities and skills to the mix.

Whilst some people – like Dawn and Riley – can be a bit annoying, most of the characters are held in high esteem by fans of the show.
