When The X-Files went off the air, a date was set; the date. Colonisation: the re-population of the Earth by its previous inhabitants, an ancient alien race who once walked the planet in prehistoric times. Those that did not leave Earth stayed behind in the form of an alien virus essentially containing their consciousness, a virus that, when infecting a human host, would control it - until gestating, via a more recent mutation, into a fully grown alien being. The end of the Mayan calendar in 2012 was the proposed date of colonisation. Then came 2008's I Want to Believe, the long-anticipated second movie in The X-Files franchise. And it addressed... absolutely nothing to do with the mythology. When the movie under-performed at the box office after being released just a week out from The Dark Knight, a third sequel was put on the back burner, and 2012 came and went. How will the show address this? Even Chris Carter isn't sure. He told xfilesnews.com in regards to the colonisation plot-line that "I don't know exactly how I'm going to address it, in a big way, a mild way, a modern way, a mention or a plot point." Carter has but a few months to work things out. With only six episodes to work with, what to show - and what to hold back in the hopes of future outings - may be the biggest question of all.
