10 Things We Learned From Twin Peaks: The Return Part 3
9. Existing Footage Has Been Repurposed
In that aforementioned headf*ck of a sequence, the spectral, disembodied head of Major Garland Briggs floats across the cosmic dimension of the Black Lodge the fallen spirit led him to.
The actor who portrayed him, Don S. Davis, died in 2008 - a full four years before co-creator Mark Frost even approached Lynch with the idea of reviving the series. He was alive during production of 1992's Fire Walk With Me prequel/sequel, but did not appear it, which makes his one line - "Blue rose" - more intriguing than it is on the surface. The Blue Rose mythology was only introduced in it. It's unclear at this point whether or not a soundalike was used.
The appearance of Briggs was fascinating in and of itself, but the implications are vast. Footage from the original series has already been lifted directly for use in The Return, but this scene indicated for the first time that it will also be repurposed. Despite dying a sad and untimely death in 1995, there is now a very strong chance that we will see the true face of BOB, Frank Silva, as events unfurl.
The use of Briggs' head alone also has implications, in that the male John Doe body found underneath the head of Ruth Davenport has not yet been identified.
