10 Things We Learned From Twin Peaks: The Return Part 6
4. We Know Of ANOTHER New Villain
We pay a brief visit to the haunted Duncan Todd in Part 6.
A red square slowly materialised on his computer screen, which triggered anxiety within him. It is a coded message, which he received by opening a safe in his office. From it, he uncovered an envelope which was then delivered to a man named Ike 'The Spike' Stadtler, who removed the contents - pictures of Lorraine and Dougie Jones. Stadtler then pinned both of them with an icepick in an on-the-nose moment of foreshadowing.
The implication is that Phillip Jeffries was displeased with Lorraine's inability to get the hit job done. That implication was made clear when we next revisited the Spike; e set upon Lorraine and stabbed her to death, spraying blood all over her and eviscerating her guts with a guttural, primal roar. His job was altogether more thorough than Lorraine's; he spotted a witness and murdered her offscreen.
Lynch is one of few filmmakers with the ability to wrench laughs out of such gruesome material; as the Spike reemerged, he looked down despondently at his broken weapon of choice. His response at the temerity of this woman, whose ripped-apart ribcage mangled the icepick beyond use, was an almost gentle "Oh no" - as if he were a toddler, and not a feral assassin.
