The show runners have already confirmed that Númenor will feature heavily in the new show. This didn't really come as any surprise given that it features so heavily in the events of the Second Age. For those who aren't familiar, Númenor was the home of Isildur and Elendil, Aragorn's ancestors.

The island kingdom was modelled on the legend of Atlantis. It was the most powerful kingdom of men; so powerful in-fact that even Sauron feared it. When the Númenóreans made war against Sauron, their army was so mighty that the Dark Lord's forces fled before them, and Sauron offered himself up in surrender. He was taken to Númenor as a prisoner, but soon corrupted the king.

At this time, Sauron was still able to appear in his fairer form. He took the name Annatar and looked more like an elf than the image we're familiar with. He eventually convinced the Númenóreans to construct shrines to Melkor, and conduct human sacrifices. He promised them that this would give them the power to invade the Undying Lands and claim immorality from the Valar.

Spoiler alert! This leads to the destruction of Númenor...
