10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Mr. Robot
9. Esmail Wanted To Make A Movie
Part of what is so incredibly impressive about Mr. Robot is how it feels genuinely cinematic. It's reminiscent of a David Fincher film with how it utilizes its cinematography, scale, and score. Even other prestige series like Breaking Bad or Justified, while excellent in their own right, still feel like small screen experiences.
With Mr. Robot there's a reason for its moviesque quality. Sam Esmail originally planned to make a movie before turning it into a television series. When he realized that the story he wanted to tell was too much to fit the runtime of a film, Esmail changed course and adapted the screenplay into a series format.
Despite the change from one medium to another, the task wasn't all that difficult to accomplish. Esmail figured the best way to successfully do the transfer was to treat the series as a feature, making each episode into a short film of sorts. Even with such a dramatic shift in length, he still managed to keep the initial ending mostly intact.
