House of the Dragon's first season finale brought one of Fire and Blood's most desolating rumours to life, although it's entirely possible that viewers were too busy averting their eyes in horror to notice. After receiving news of Viserys' death and Aegon's coronation, the pregnant Rhaenyra miscarries.

The account of the dwarvish court fool Mushroom - the source of much of Fire and Blood's canon - describes Rhaenyra's daughter as monstrously deformed, with dragon-like defects. The baby's facial features are essentially indiscernible through a layer of blood, but a post shared by make-up designer Barry Gowan reveals the extent of the show's fidelity to the original source material.

The silicone infant's corpse mirrors large portions of Mushroom's description. While she may not possess the stubby tail or gaping hole in her chest as alluded to by the dwarf, the baby's misshapen head has no nose while her body is covered in reptilian scales. This harrowing visual eerily echoes the experiences of Rhaenyra's descendant Daenerys - her child by Khal Drogo was alleged to have been born with similar deformities.

It's also worth noting that many viewers may have missed the significance of the shots of Syrax interspersed with Rhaenyra giving birth. This visual is intended to symbolise the deep connection between dragon and Targaryen. The child's father Daemon is nowhere to be found, yet Syrax roars in anguish as if the lost child was her own.
