10 Times BoJack Horseman Assaulted Our Feelings
4. BoJack strangles Gina
(“The Showstopper” – Season 5, Episode 11)
As we know by now BoJack definitely fits into the category of anti-hero and never is this more evident than in this unhinged display of anguish, psychosis and loss of self-control.
Upon characterising the identity of Philbert on a new hit TV show, BoJack personifies the character on the small screen but also begins playing him in his day to day life, unknowingly to himself and those around him. Tied in with his heavily addictive dependence on his prescription pills, his fictitious persona begins to coincide and eventually merge with that of his own. After failing to separate the realms between reality and fiction his symptoms become worse as his spiralling fluctuates into an abyss of troubles.
The biggest one being when he strangles his co-star and at the time girlfriend, Gina.
During filming for the series a scene in which the main star strangles the female lead is the prospect, but in typical Horseman fashion BoJack takes this a step too far. As Gina relentlessly struggles for a glimpse of oxygen, his hands remain clasped tightly around her throat. It isn't until the co-workers circulating the scene shortly debate amongst themselves; whether he’s showing a set of unexpectedly fantastic acting skills or whether they’re observing a very sick man who is secretly crying out for help.
