10 Times Mad Men Became The Weirdest Drama On Television

1. That Time Dick Whitman Accidentally Killed A Guy Then Stole His Identity

For a straightforward drama where the emphasis is on character and realistically recreating a period, Mad Men pivots on one hell of a far-fetched concept. That'd be the idea that 'Don Draper' - really Dick Whitman - accidentally blew up the real Don Draper in the Korean War, then stole his identity and lived life back in the US as Draper without the authorities ever getting wise. In the original and best weird Mad Men moment, Dick drops his lighter and explodes his CO, Lt. Don Draper, to crispy death, then swaps clothes with the corpse hoping to return home to find relatively few problems arising from his decision. It works of course, and even stranger is how accepting everyone is of Dick/Don's ruse when they find out the truth. "Who cares?", Bert Cooper glibly tells Pete Campbell at the end of series 1, when the slimy copywriter attempts to get Dick/Don in trouble. For Bert and seemingly everybody else in Dick/Don's life, it's OK that he's living a lie, just as long as he keeps being the smoothest bastard in advertising while he's at it.
