Dr. Beverly Crusher is the highly trained, brilliant, no-nonsense chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise-D and one of the more reliable voices of reason onboard.

It’s eye-raising, then, that when she visits her grandmother’s haunted house and encounters Ronin, the spirit inhabiting the grounds, she promptly goes for a bit of, let’s say, otherworldly possession.

Yes, in an episode framed like a 19th century gothic romance thriller, Crusher gets it on with a ghoulie. It’s apparently a family tradition stretching back centuries, as Ronin has sought out and hooked up with the women of the doctor’s family for many generations.

“The sensations were very real and extremely arousing,” says Crusher, referring to the same figure who has, again, been in the sack with dozens of her ancestors already.

This being Star Trek, of course, there’s no such things as ghosts, and Ronin is in reality an anaphasic lifeform that needs a human host to maintain its cohesion. Crusher destroys him and admits to being glad to have ended, as she puts it, the long, bizarre “family tradition”.

Having sex with ghosts, that is. The women in Crusher’s family had a long and proud tradition of having sex with ghosts.
