10 Times Star Trek: The Next Generation Went "Dark & Gritty"

2. Violations

From the episode title, you already know this one goes to a dark place. Primarily, the episode deals with the aftermath of a sexual assault.

Quick background, a group of telepaths arrives onboard the Enterprise. They are historians and specialize in teasing out forgotten memories from their subject’s mind. They are also powerful telepaths capable of forcibly manipulating peoples’ memories.

Meanwhile, Troi is in her quarters recalling a pleasant memory of a time she and Riker were together. Suddenly, memory becomes violent. Riker forces himself on Troi despite her protests. He then transforms into Jev, one of the visiting telepaths.

Jev goes on to telepathically attack Riker and Crusher to cover up his crime. However, Troi is the only one who is sexually assaulted.

Unfortunately, she spends most of the episode in a coma and only serves as a victim for Jev. Violations would have been better had Troi had a more active role in the episode.
