10 Times The Simpsons Jumped The Shark
6. The '90s Episode
On the one hand it seems churlish to have a pop at The Simpsons for rewriting its own mythology. The show started over 30 years ago and Bart and Lisa remain pre-teens - it stands to reason that the history of these characters is a flexible proposition. Even so, there’s something about “That ‘90s Show” that stands out as an especially annoying retcon.
The story of Marge and Homer is one that shouldn’t be touched if at all possible. Early episodes have so perfectly chronicled their meeting, falling in love, getting married and starting a family, so it’s a shame for that to be chucked aside for the purposes of one episode.
It’s all the more disappointing when you take into consideration the episode itself, which is little more than an excuse for the writers to do some jokes about Nirvana. Homer becomes a rock star, while Marge goes to college.
It’s a rehash of the barbershop quartet episode, as well as an insult to the canon of The Simpsons. Is this taking a cartoon too seriously? Yes. But it’s annoying all the same!
