10 Times The Simpsons Ruined Homer's Life
9. Selling His Ride On The Duff Blimp For Lisa’s Benefit
Now, it’s easy to be snarky about Homer’s parenting. He forgets he has a third child and doesn’t know who ‘Margaret Simpson’ is, generally allows Bart to run riot, pays precious little attention to his children, doesn’t know how to deal with his brilliant daughter Lisa and mostly leaves her to her own devices… he once sang that he’d “rather drink a beer than win Father of the Year,” and that sums him up rather nicely.
How do the rest of the family put up with him? Because he can be super sweet on rare occasions, that’s why. In “Lisa the Beauty Queen,” the middle Simpson sibling is feeling very insecure about her appearance. Homer enters her in the Little Miss Springfield pageant, and she’s initially distraught that he did so without her knowledge. However, she later learns that Homer sold the grand prize he won at the Power Plant’s raffle (a ride on the Duff Blimp) to fund her entry in the pageant.
In typical Simpsons style, her roundabout victory is short lived and everything returns to normal. Before it does, however, we get to see how thoroughly dejected Homer felt about the decision he’d made.
