It’s hard to imagine it now, but there was a time when nerdy pastimes weren’t mainstream.

In the days before superhero movies ruled the box office, a TV show that made regular references to comic books and video games was a bit of a novelty, which is partly why The Big Bang Theory got as popular as it did.

The lives of this loveable gang of socially awkward dweebs were watched by millions every week who were enthralled by their dorky habits. The writers assumed that their viewers wanted to see more mentions of nerdy stuff on the show, and whilst this was true up to a point, they took it way too far.

Soon, everything on The Big Bang Theory was a geeky joke. Sometimes, they weren’t even jokes - the characters would just say the name of something related to comics or games or science and expect a big laugh.

As this sort of culture became more and more popular, these gags became more and more tired. The Big Bang Theory quickly became a parody of itself and many people decided they’d had enough.
