The Jill Dando murder remains one of the strangest unsolved crimes in modern British history. A significant chunk of time has passed since the tragic event, and yet we still know absolutely no more about it than we did at the time.

The facts: in April 1999 presenter and journalist Jill Dando was shot dead just before midnight in front of her house in Fulham. An enormous investigation immediately launched, of a scale not seen in Britain for many years. A man named Barry George was arrested and spent eight years in prison, but the somewhat shaky conviction was eventually overturned.

Everything else remains a matter of pure speculation. Theories raged as to why Dando would be targeted for murder, but these were diffuse and mostly unconvincing - some tried to link her professional work as a motive, but she was hardly a controversial figure. Many, many persons of interest were interviewed, none of which went anywhere.

As a mystery it remains truly fascinating in its oddness; as a tragedy it remains baffling, and perhaps worthy of further investigation.
