10 TV Couples That Created Unrealistic Expectations About Relationships
7. Bert/Ernie - Sesame Street
Who cares that these two are puppets? Nobody's perfect. The point is that Bert and Ernie are one of the most enduring couples in the history of television, and that's even without Sesame Street acknowledging their relationship. No, they're not exactly what you might call canonical, but that's just because the world isn't ready for their love. Anyone with eyes can see that they're together. These cohabitating friends/lovers are wonderful because they accept each other despite everything. Ernie ignores Bert's giant unibrow, and Bert comes to terms with Ernie's slightly alarming predilection for rubber duckies. And honestly, any relationship that has lasted since 1969 (Bert and Ernie were the only parts of the original pilot to have tested particularly well, so their roles were expanded) and continues on to the present day in relative harmony is worthy of appreciation. With divorce rates and adultery being what they are, Bert and Ernie represent one of the very few celebrity couples the world can rely on.
