10 TV Deaths We All Saw Coming (That Still Left Us Stunned)
7. Rita Bennett - Dexter
Television shows love to create scenarios where a character with a dangerous life tries to live an ordinary life on the side. Acting as if nothing would ever go wrong. Rita Bennett was Dexter's loving wife and in a world of serial killers and murderers, she was never safe. In retrospect, the most surprising part about her death is that it didn't happen sooner.
But the writing in Dexter always kept Rita on the fringes, away from the danger. Dexter was obsessed with his own pursuit of justice and we were vicariously obsessed through him. The show kept us thinking about his life, the lives of criminals and the people he worked with for so long that they still managed to shock the world when Rita was finally put in harms way. And pretty brutally too, even for the graphic crime show's standards
Murdered in her bathtub by Dexter's "arch-enemy" the Trinity Killer, they didn't reveal the horrific news of her death until the last few minutes of the season, even after the Trinity Killer had been killed. It was such great writing to make it feel like a twist, but in reality we should have seen it coming from episode one.
