Attack on Titan follows warrior scout Eren Jaeger, who vows to destroy cannibalistic giants called Titans who've spent years terrorising the world. Though there are hints of the Titans' origins throughout, there are not many set-in-stone facts until the final season. As a result, viewers had to wait almost a decade to learn the truth about the colossal humanoids.
And this is what we got.
Long ago, peasant girl Ymir stumbled upon a sacred tree, where she bonded with a ghostly centipede-like being called The Source of All Living Matter. The spine-shaped entity endowed Ymir and her future offspring with the ability to turn into Titans. Even though there's much more to the Titans' backstory, that's the gist of it.
Sadly, this so-called answer simply creates more questions. Where did the tree come from? Is The Source an alien, a spirit, a demon, or a god? Why did The Source give Ymir this power? Was the creature blessing her or cursing her?
Anyone who hoped the two-part finale would clear up the situation were in for a rude awakening. As the story is seemingly wrapping up, the last few minutes skips ahead eons into the future, where a stranger enters another sacred tree. This ending implies this person will fuse with The Source, initiating another generation of Titans.
Although the climax could've given long-time fans closure, it left them more confused than ever.
