10 TV Seasons That Are Practically Flawless
9. Big Little Lies: Season One
A drama about the lives of five middle class mothers and their relationships and struggles doesn't sound all that compelling, but add in a murder mystery aspect and an assortment of secrets and lies and you have a thrilling season of television. Originally designed as a limited series, the misguided decision to add a second season was regretful. No matter how great Meryl Streep is, the show fails to justify Season Two's existence.
Although it fails to add anything overly worthwhile, Season Two doesn't alter the experience of the brilliant first season. With an incredible cast fronted by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies is entirely committed to these characters and their families. The secret weapon being Laura Dern's Renata Klein, whose entire drive revolves around her public perception and flaunting her privilege to her friends. Dern gets all the best lines and her searing entitlement is nothing short of a joy to watch.
Big Little Lies also has a strong core message concerning domestic abuse and sexual violence and how that abuse can impact others surrounding it. It is a narrative that is handled delicately and with care thanks to some stellar writing from David E. Kelly.
