You'd be forgiven for assuming a great deal of behind-the-scenes wizardry was at play throughout many of the sequences that saw Tom Sturridge's Lord Morhpeus chatting away to Patton Oswalt's raven by the name of Matthew over the course of Netflix's recent The Sandman series.

And you'd be right... for the most part.

That's because, according to an interview involving Sturridge talking to Polygon, there were a number of moments during the show when he was actually sharing the scene with a genuine raven. What a world.

According to the Dream actor himself, "a real raven!" was present at times, along with "a very tall man with a pumpkin on his head" for certain moments involving Mark Hamill's Mervyn Pumpkinhead.

The reliance on practical methods on set wherever possible was a huge reason for the Morhpheus star wanting to be a part of the project in the first place, with the actor noting how “there’s a danger with these kinds of productions, that it becomes a kind of CGI orgy."

So, in the case of Matthew, whenever the team could, a raven by the name of Mr. T was on hand to steal the scene, with an actor on set providing his voice on the day.
