It's truly remarkable that one of the most intelligent and socially aware animated shows ever made came from Beavis & Butt-Head, but that's exactly the case with Daria, which follows its eponymous character through the trials of high school.
Fusing deliciously cynical deadpan humour with compelling characters and smart assessments of pop culture and growing up, Daria proved to be an instant hit for MTV, and a rare comedy with a female lead who didn't become a walking stereotype. For over sixty episodes, it lived up to the hype it created.
Simply animated and never stretching its premise too far, the series tackled class issues and identity with insight and plenty of jokes, and in the process cemented its title character as one of the most iconic in TV history. Beavis & Butt-Head brought more laughs, but Daria had the guts to say something alongside them.
