Who It Was

Now obviously, the characters on Family Guy aren't supposed to be likeable or relatable. The whole point of the show is that we're laughing at them rather than with them. However, even by those standards, Peter Griffin fails horribly as a main character.

The problem with Peter is that his character's worst traits have only increased as the show has gone on in an attempt to wring those last few laughs from the formula. He's degenerated into nothing but an idiot manchild, whose behaviour is at best grating and at worst borderline abusive. More importantly, he's no longer funny or entertaining to watch.

Who It Should Have Been

While Peter may be the biggest offender, it's a problem that a lot of the show's characters have gone through. There is still one Family Guy character capable of raising more than a few chuckles though, Mayor Adam West.

Nothing better encapsulates Seth MacFarlane's love of combing surreal humour with obscure pop-culture references than having the former Batman actor as the mayor of Quahog. It's a set-up that provides far more opportunities for absurdist humour than the adventures of the Griffin family and Adam West's gloriously hammy delivery means the character never grows old.

Plus, who doesn't want to imagine that Adam West spends all day getting involved in wacky hijinks?
