10 TV Shows That Were Doomed From The Start
2. Gotham
Current Fox show Gotham is run by The Mentalist's Bruno Heller, and was originally conceived as a crime drama following Gotham City police detective James Gordons early career. The concept evolved (if you can call it that) to showcase new origin stories for a variety of Batman villains and supporting characters, as Gordon and a young Bruce Wayne begin the friendship that will inform the Batmans beginnings as protector of the city.
Once again, a television show exploring everything uninteresting or unimportant about the beginnings of an iconic superhero was greenlit. But at least Smallville appealed to kids and teenagers with its teen-soap plotting; it's still unclear who Gotham is supposed to appeal to.
Loud, brash callbacks (callforwards?) to well-known elements of the Batman mythos have become this embarrassment's calling card, leading to many DO YOU SEE? moments, inevitably followed by AHHHHH moments as the show's writers milk the Batman connection for all it's worth, while simultaneously insulting the intelligence of the audience with their broad winking.
Unfortunately for actual fans of the Batman character, the series will soon be starting its third season, despite a steadily declining viewership. Rumours that NBC are preparing to unveil a show called Nazareth, featuring Jesus as a young boy with no superpowers, going fishing with his friends and helping his dad run a carpentry business, have been invented for the purposes of this article.
