Very few people on The Walking Dead can be classified as an outright hero or villain, with even main protagonist Rick Grimes blurring the line on a number of occasions. Perhaps none exemplify the world of TWD better than his best friend, Shane Walsh.

When the series kicks off, Shane is Rick's best friend. He shows remorse over his friend being in hospital in a coma and, we learn, has taken great care of his family while he's been in a coma. It's complicated, of course, by his growing feelings of love for Lori Grimes, which he has to attempt to reconcile with Rick's return and his loyalty to his friend.

He has a growing aggression inside of him, even briefly aiming his gun at him, but he's very much on the right side, serving either as leader or Rick's right-hand man. But that anger inside of him only continues to expand, and eventually starts forcing its way outwards across Season 2. He kills Otis in order to save himself and Carl, and from there he becomes increasingly unstable and then full on loose cannon.

Towards the end of the second season he has completely devolved, going from someone who, while hardened, did care about his friends and was capable of compassion, into a remorseless killer and a lying, conniving person, all the way down to turning fully against Rick, luring his former best friend out into the woods in order to kill him, and paying with his life.
