Isaiah Washington was a huge part of the early seasons of Grey's Anatomy, playing Dr. Preston Burke from 2005 to 2007. His dismissal came after one of the most well-publicised behind the scenes dramas of all time (making it rather in front of the scenes): Washington used a gay slur against co-star T.R. Knight in late 2006. Knight would later disclose that he was, in fact, gay. Washington apologized, but the incident would not go away. He would joke about it at the 2007 Golden Globes, saying that "I love gay. I wanted to be gay. Please let me be gay." However, despite the apology, he later claimed he never made the comments, something Knight disputed, telling Ellen on her show that "everybody heard him." As the controversy wouldn't go away, ABC opted not to renew Washington's contract. Washington would then blame the whole situation on racism, and claim that the controversy "killed the actor in him." He did return for a final appearance on Grey's Anatomy in 2014.
