10 TV Shows You Were Ready To Hate
9. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law
It's safe to say that both the quality and reception of Marvel's slate of Disney+ originals has been... mixed, at best. Some standouts have shone through, but the majority have sadly fallen somewhat flat for all but the most dedicated of fans.
When a series surrounding She-Hulk was announced back in 2019, the response was primarily positive, as the introduction of a beloved female hero to the still overwhelmingly male-dominated MCU seemed a step in the right direction. With Orphan Black’s immensely talented Tatiana Maslany set to portray the superhuman lawyer, it was hoped in spite of the prior less-than-excellent TV offerings that the character’s humour would bring a more light-hearted, comedic tone to the franchise.
Then we all saw the trailer. And, more importantly: the CGI.
When transformed, Maslany’s She-Hulk was a plastic-y-looking, lurid green supermodel that teetered somewhere between uncanny valley and Shrek. Both fans and critics immediately found it unreal and distracting, meaning that much of the expectation prior to release was less about the quality of the narrative or acting, and more about how terrible it was all going to look.
While it remains somewhat egregious compared to the visual effects work of earlier Marvel properties, someone clearly intervened between the trailer and first episode, because the CGI in the show is a degree better than expected. Luckily, the writing and performances were received much more positively, and She-Hulk is generally regarded as a decently fun foray into the MCU’s take on sitcoms. The defence rests!
