10 TV Sitcom Characters With Shockingly Dark Backstories
6. Ted Lasso - Ted Lasso
This entry comes with a spoiler alert.
Apple TV's Ted Lasso is a show not many people expected a lot from. The premise is great, but no one could have seen the sheer critical success of the show coming. It's a special kind of comedy that takes you by surprise and even leaves you in tears at times, and leading the charge on that is the beloved titular hero, Ted Lasso himself.
Lasso is the kind of character everyone needs in their life. He's optimistic, thoughtful, caring and an overall positive figure, encouraging growth and self-improvement. Of course, the show made plenty of efforts to hint at hidden darkness within Ted, especially whenever issues of his father came up, and when this was fully revealed, it painted a heartbreaking picture of his childhood.
In season two of the show, it's revealed that Ted's father committed suicide, leaving the unfortunate sixteen-year-old and his mother in a situation that doesn't bear thinking about. This act shaped Ted as a person and somewhat explains why he performs so many acts of kindness.
