10 Underrated Horror TV Shows From The '90s You Totally Forgot About
8. Kindred: The Embraced
It's hard not to be a little hypercritical of movies and TV shows based on video games. Games offer so much immersion and special effects that it's challenging to do them much justice on the larger screen. However, the show Kindred: The Embraced managed to make the best of it.
Somewhat based on the role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade, Kindred: The Embraced managed to capture the horror and high-drama of its source material. Without more bottomless wallets, though, the showrunners focused on well-rounded characters and more in-depth storytelling than special effects. And whenever the vampires fought, it was mainly in the form of hand-to-hand combat.
Vampires were everywhere throughout the '90s, so it only made sense that FOX tried to make loads of money off the bloodsuckers. Kindred: The Embraced was different, as it offered a less conventional plot than the tired tropes perpetuated by big-budget films.
Another fact that made Kindred: The Embraced better than the typical vampire drama was that its short shelf-life wasn't due to the series bombing in the ratings. Sadly, it was the unfortunate death of actor Mark Frankel, who played Julian Luna, that convinced producers to reconsider a second season. Kindred: The Embraced might have found further success if it had continued, but longing for more episodes is also part of what makes watching the show so enjoyable today.
