10 Unscripted Supernatural Moments That Were Kept In The Show
Some moments were too good to be left out.

For 15 seasons, Supernatural was one of the most popular shows the CW had to offer. At its core, it tells the story of Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who go around America fighting supernatural beings. Along the way, the boys ended up gaining the help of the angel Castiel who became a prominent part of Team Free Will.
It is clear to fans that the actors on the show had just as much fun making Supernatural as we did watching it. This helped the cast get a lot of input into how the show works. In fact, many of the series' greatest moments weren't written at all.
Some of these great moments were entirely improvised or a scene was approached in a different, funnier way than planned. There are also spontaneous remarks that were so great, they managed to stay in the final cut.
As the actors started to understand and know their characters far better than the show's writers did, they added in little nitpicks that they believed would fit the overall character, or taken something Supernatural fans have said throughout the years and incorporated them into the show.
10. Dean's Famous Catchphrase
Anyone who watches Supernatural, whether avid fans or not, knows what Dean’s famous catchphrase is. However, not many know that Jensen Ackles improvised this phrase multiple times throughout the show as it was only meant to be used as a one-off during one of the earlier seasons.
The improvisation of his catchphrase can be most noticeably seen in the season three episode, Bad Day at Black Rock. After Sam starts to lose all his luck when Bela Talbot steals the lucky rabbit foot from him, the brothers go on a mission to retrieve that item in which Dean ends up accidentally touching the foot, gaining himself an unprecedented amount of luck. With this, Dean decided to buy himself winning lottery tickets in the hopes that’ll it makes the brothers rich.
However, Dean’s luck runs out after they destroy the rabbit’s foot, finding out that Bela stole the winning tickets from the brothers and gained the prize money for herself. After learning about Bela’s betrayal (yet again), Dean lets out a frustrated version of his famous phrase.
If you watch the episode closely, you can see Jared Padalecki smiling and holding in his laugh as he turns away from the camera, since Dean’s outburst was unscripted but Jensen cleverly added this in, knowing that it was in-character for Dean.
9. A Baby In A Trench Coat
As the brothers, Bobby, and Castiel are investigating and trying to find Eve - the mother of all monsters - they find themselves in a diner, with Castiel claiming he’ll quickly take a look around the town to try and find where Eve is.
When he doesn't disappear, Castiel claims that Eve is powerful, taking away all his powers. This causes Dean to start arguing with Castiel, saying without his powers he is just a “baby in a trench coat.” Actor Misha Collins completely forgot what his actual lines were meant to be and looked out of the window, staying in character, acting hurt by what Dean had just said to him.
This prompted Jared Padalecki to improvise the line “I think you hurt his feelings”, with Padalecki just trying to fill in the awkward silence when filming. The ad-lib was so perfect, the producer decided to keep the unscripted line in the final product rather than the reshot scene, as it added a little bit of humour into a fairly serious episode.
8. Fight The Fairies
Clap Your Hands If You Believe was Supernatural’s version of a hilarious X-Files episode, even ripping off the iconic X-Files opening for the opening title card of the episode.
This offering sees the Winchester brothers investigate UFOs and crop circles which are linked with the mysterious disappearances of the people of Elwood, Indiana. When Dean gets taken by one of the mysterious UFOs, we learn later on that, when he comes back, he was actually transported to the Fairy realm and that the fairies were the cause of the kidnappings.
There are a few unscripted moments that appeared in this episode, though there’s one that is the most noticeable but extremely hilarious addition to the episode. Dean mistakenly ends up talking to a little man, thinking he was a fairy that was haunting him since the abduction. He later apologies, saying he was only kidding (another improvisation by Jensen Ackles) but was still arrested for attacking someone on the street.
As Dean’s being placed into the cop car, he yells out to Sam to “FIGHT THE FAIRIES!” multiple times, making this the best improv Jensen did in the episode as it added more humour into the already bizarre episode.
7. Scooby Doo F-Bomb
One of the strangest and best episodes of Supernatural was Scoobynatural. Having Sam and Dean team up with Mystery Incorporated was something that no one expected to happen, yet it weirdly made a lot of sense as both go to haunted places hunting ghosts and saving people (even if the ghosts in Scooby-Doo turn out to be fake 99% of the time). When Sam and Dean are transferred into Scooby-Doo, the ghosts to are real, which the Scooby gang struggle to process.
As Sam, Dean and Castiel witness Scooby and Co. having a mental breakdown, Dean steps in to give them a prep talk and convince them to help the Winchesters to capture and stop the ghost that’s chasing them. At the end of the speech, Dean unexpectedly drops the F-bomb to emphasise his point to Fred saying, “F*cking right, you can!”
Although the F-bomb was beeped out when the episode aired, it was still a shocking and hilarious addition to the episode that Jensen Ackles ad-libbed when filming the episode.
6. Eye Of The Tiger
Supernatural may be a sci-fi drama horror TV show, but it also provided fans with plenty of laughs throughout its years. Season Four’s Yellow Fever is one of those episodes which relies on humour to keep the episode and storyline going. It was also a nice change of tone for the fans of the show, as Season Four is one of the heavier seasons.
During the episode, Dean becomes affected by an illness which is plaguing the town, causing him to experience serve anxiety symptoms that make him incapable of walking past a group of teenagers, drive past the speed limit, or stay in a motel room that is higher than the first floor. At one point, Dean stays in the car as Sam goes to get the brothers some food.
In the car, Dean listens to the classic ‘80s rock tune ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and starts to jam out, leaving his anxieties behind. Dean’s spontaneous jam was improvised by Jensen Ackles, with Ackles going all-out giving a full-on performance of the song which sadly wasn’t shown fully during the episode. While fans only saw a glimpse of the improv, the entire performance was played over the credits - creating an instance classic Supernatural moment.
5. Dirty Sign Language

Another F-bomb that was dropped in the show, although many may have missed this one. In Season Eleven, Sam and Dean visit a retirement home which a Banshee is terrorizing. They meet a deaf hunter named Eileen who was out to kill the Banshee out of revenge before it kills her parents.
This was the episode that sparked the relationship between Sam and Eileen, a relationship which many fans loved and supported for both the characters. During a sweet scene in the episode, Sam attempts to communicate with Eileen using sign language by telling her thank you. However, he accidentally signs the word for f**k, with Eileen quickly correcting him with the correct hand placement.
This was a funny gag that actors Jared Padalecki and Shoshannah Stern came up with to add a more playful tone to their scene together. Although the fans who don’t speak sign language wouldn’t have known the blunder, we bet those who do understand sign language got a little giggle out of Sam’s mistake.
4. Climbing Over The Gate

The brotherly connection between both the characters and the actors is what made fans continue to return to Supernatural. Since working on the show for so long, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki came to know their characters very well and would always add in small things they knew the fans would notice and love, creating a deeper connection between the actors and fans alike.
Some of the best moments were the light-hearted comedy that appeared throughout the show. This is especially noticeable in the Season Twelve episode, American Nightmares, when the brothers are checking out a house from which they suspect demon activity is coming. While entering the properly, we see Dean attempt to jump a small fence, awkwardly pulling his body over it as his dramatic entrance was ruined by his lack of flexibility.
To make the scene funnier, Sam simply walks around the side of the fence, all while judging Dean in his failed attempt of trying to act cool. It is a small funny character interaction that feels like a typical sibling moment, an idea that the actors Ackles and Padalecki came up with.
3. Dean Eating The Lizard
Wayward Sisters focused mainly on Claire, Alex, Jodie, Donna, Kaia and Patience being a backdoor pilot episode for the spin-off series Wayward Sisters, which unfortunately didn’t get greenlit. Although Sam and Dean were not in the episode as much - they were trapped in an alternative universe named The Bad Place - we see glimpses of the brothers finding ways to survive. One being cooking and eating a lizard.
As Dean was munching down on a cooked lizard, Sam looks on in disgust with Dean claiming that it doesn’t taste bad but it defiantly tastes like lizard. During the scene, the brothers hear some not-so-friendly noises coming toward them, causing them to uproot from their spot to find a new safe place. However, we see Dean hilariously run back to pick up his lizard before running away again.
This little move was improvised by Jensen Ackles, who claimed that “Dean doesn’t leave food.” So, it felt very much in character to show Dean running back to retrieve the unfinished lizard. This ad-lib, again, proves how much the actors understood their characters as well as knowing that the fans would also understand the small things that their characters do.
2. German Castiel
In Season Thirteen, we see the Winchester brothers travel to an alternate universe where they were never born, resulting in the apocalypse going ahead and causing angels and demons to be at war with each other, not caring about anyone who got caught in the crossfire. With the alternative universe, we got to see many beloved characters back, including Bobby Singer and Charlie Bradbury, but also alternative versions of characters who were already alive in Sam and Dean’s world.
During the episode Exodus, Dean travels to the alternative world to search for his mother and Jack who are trapped there. In a scene where he’s searching for Mary and Jack, we see Charlie being tortured by the angels. The angels aren’t able to crack her so they call a specialist who turns out to be an alternative version of everyone’s favourite angel, Castiel.
This version of Castiel is cold, mean and menacing, he is blind in one eye and has a surprising German accent. Actor Misha Collins decided to ad-lib the accent in order to make this alternative version of Castiel stand out and be completely different from the Castiel we know and love. However, many fans didn’t enjoy the accent choice, something that Misha Collins himself apologized for after the backlash from fans.
1. Dean Punching Sam

During Season One of Supernatural, the boys were feeling out of their depth when they released - and were faced with - a demon, which the fan favourite Meg Masters turned out to be. In Season Two, Meg possesses Sam, causing him to go on a spree of killing hunters, with Sam having no idea he was possessed or what happened during the time Meg took over his body.
As Meg takes over Sam’s body again, this time to go and kill their friend Jo, Dean rushes in and takes his possessed sibling to Bobby’s house where they subdue Sam under a devil’s trap. However, Meg is able to neutralize the devil trap (something we never see her do again in the show) and attacks Dean while Bobby performs an exorcism that causes Meg to be ripped from Sam’s body.
As Sam awakens from the events, he has no memory of what happened. The scene was originally meant to end there, but Jensen Ackles improvised punching Jared Padalecki to "make sure" Sam defiantly wasn’t possessed by Meg anymore.
