It was six episodes into the first season ("Moaning Lisa") when Lisa, enveloped with depression, went for a walk late at night and ended up hearing the melodic saxophone sounds of one Bleeding Gums Murphy on a bridge in Springfield. While he didn't play the saxophone in the episode, Ron Taylor did voice the Blues Man, becoming the first "Special Guest" in Simpsons' history. Taylor did not sing The Star Spangled Banner in Season 2's "Dancin' Homer," but would reprise the role in "Round Springfield" in 1995, which was the final official appearance of Bleeding Gums Murphy, as his character passed away, leaving Lisa his saxophone. But in the Simpsons' Universe, a character's death means little to whether or not the character returns, be it in flashbacks or as a throwaway gag. And, given the popularity of Bleeding Gums Murphy, and the relationship he and Lisa shared throughout the series run- Lisa even knit a patch onto her family quilt of his likeness- he could have shown up many, many more times in Springfield. Unfortunately, Taylor died of a heart attack in 2002, seven years after his counterpart Bleeding Gums Murphy.
