10 Ways Friends Was Almost Completely Different

9. Joey Was Originally A D*ck

To this day, Matt LeBlanc's Joey Tribbiani remains one of the - if not the - most popular Friends character.

Every Friends fan has their own personal favourite of the series' main six characters, yet a good portion of that fan base will lean towards the antics of loveable idiot, pizza enthusiast, and prolific womaniser Joey as their absolute favourite of the show's core six.

There are elements of Joey's personality that are not exactly positive traits - notably said womanising, and also his dislike of sharing - but the jolly, playful and oft-confused persona of the character make him such an appealing figure who is a constant source of entertainment.

The thing is, Joey wasn't actually supposed to be quite as, well, Joey when the show initially begun production. Back then, the Joey character was written to be a total d*ck.

Why did this element of the character get scrapped? That's because actor Matt LeBlanc asked the extremely valid question of why the other five characters would be friends with somebody who was an utter ass.

From there, Joey was tweaked to become the character that we know and love.
