10 Ways Modern Family Is Not Like Modern Families

7. They Have Lots Of Free Time

Whilst work plays a part in the show, the vast majority of Modern Family takes place during the characters' free time. This makes sense from an entertainment perspective - dull meetings about wardrobe sales? Studying High School level Shakespeare? Were Modern Family to go into painful, boring detail about these everyday things it probably wouldn't be an exciting show. However, there's a big free time problem in America at the moment. People are working harder and longer hours, with The Economist reports that 60% of workers who use smartphones are connected to their jobs for over 13 hours a day. With longer work days comes less free time and higher stress levels. Parents are often forced to choose between advancing their careers, and having the time to spend with their family.
