10 Worst Buffy The Vampire Slayer Villains

2. Coach Marin And The Gill Monsters (Season 2, Episode 20)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Mutant Enemy

‘Go Fish’ is a dreadful episode with a ludicrous plot. Determined to improve the quality of his swim team, Coach Marin doses the boys with a performance-enhancing drug.

Before long, the swim team start transforming into Gill Monsters, and it turns out Coach Marin nicked this performance-enhancing drug from the Soviets, who had tried to improve the quality of their swimmers with fish DNA.

These fishy demons are clearly inspired by Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), and – to be fair – they are freaky to look at. But without the ability to speak, these demons aren’t very compelling. They don’t serve much of a purpose beyond giving Buffy something to punch, as Coach Marin is really the main villain.

But he’s not particularly interesting, either. His psychotic obsession with teamwork and success leads to an abundance of corny dialogue, and his use of firearms is a cheap way of getting one up on the Slayer.

To top it all off, the final scene features a group of Gill Monsters swimming away from Sunnydale towards the sea. The soundtrack tries to make the scene creepy, but the Gill Monsters look so stupid bobbing up and down in the water that it comes across as funny rather than scary.
