4. My Absence (Season 8 Episode 9)

Scrubs Zach Braff
NBC

In this episode, JD is away on vacation and causes a wide array of reactions. Elliot misses him dearly whilst Cox is overjoyed. Meanwhile, Carla tells Turk that she is pregnant again but is disappointed when nobody is excited for her.

Why it sucks: I mentioned earlier that I am not JDs biggest fan, but I have to admit that Scrubs is nowhere near as good without him. Not only does his absence cause a huge vacuum in the show but The Janitor is also nowhere to be seen! Take away the two characters with the funniest relationship and you're left with the other characters to pick up the pieces. Although there is a plethora of talent on display, the show works best when all characters are together and firing on all comedy cylinders.

What doesn't suck: I like the angle the writers went with for Carla's character. The idea that Carla has finally lost her compassionate side after years of working as a nurse gave her character another dimension which she so desperately needed. The only shame is that the writers thought of it so late on as it would have been an interesting arc to explore further.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
