10 Worst Simpsons Guest Stars (Who Played Themselves)
7. Rupert Murdoch
Honestly, who asked for this?
Rupert Murdoch guest started in Sunday, Cruddy Sunday along with several other unnecessary guest stars, but is far and away the worst. Dolly Parton is superfluous but at least sounds like she’s having fun, while Fred Willard plays a good part as the hapless Wally Kogen. The rest of them though are utterly pointless.
Murdoch isn’t just a bad guest star though, his spot is massively self indulgent. As the owner of News Corp (who own Fox, who own The Simpsons), Murdoch being on the show is utterly transparent vanity. It wouldn’t be so bad if he was in any way funny or likeable, but he’s neither.
All his lines are hammy yells, and he frequently features highly on lists of the least likeable people in media. His networks have tried to monopolise news broadcasts and networks around the globe; wherever you stand on politics, media monopolies are bad news.
The idea that he’d be able to stop the Super Bowl so adoring fans and players would spell his name is laughable, and not in a good way. Worst of a bad bunch in this episode.
