8. The Word Takes Advantage Of Some Hopefuls
Channel 4Despite making a powerful enemy in the press and causing conservative parents nationwide to tear their hair out, controversial magazine show The Word was a staple of late night TV in the 1990s. This anarchic programme was hosted by Terry Christian, Mark Lamarr and Dani Behr among others, and spawned an array of memorable moments, including L7's Donita Sparx exposing her ladygarden during a performance of 'Pretend We're Dead,' a notoriously cringeworthy drunken appearance by Oliver Reed and Oasis' first live TV performance. However, it was The Hopefuls segment that produced some of the show's most bizarre and often downright freaky moments. This involved getting some odd people who would literally do anything to get on television, to literally do anything on television - and the results, rather like the contestants, were stomach churning. Guests would eat pubic chair covered crackers, drink puke, eat worms, take on bird eating spiders, bathe in animal excrement, and worse.
