8. The Driscoll Brothers

Tony Angelino Only Fools And Horses
BBC

The Driscoll Brothers receive a few mentions throughout the show’s tenure, but they appear in only one episode. Brilliantly described by Boycie and Del Boy as looking like an evictee from the Planet of the Apes, and the other with a face like Cliff Richards (with a face you’d want to slap), Danny and Tony are local mobsters with a unique signature: they only attack people below the face.

Being on-screen for no longer than five minutes in Series 6’s ‘Little Problems,’ The Driscolls, played by Roy Marsden and the Young Ones’ Christopher Ryan, dominate the screen. The towering ape, Danny, orders everyone in the pub a drink with £1 and commands change, whereas pint-sized Tony looks menacing at landlord Mike.

In this episode, where Rodney marries Cassandra, The Driscolls act as a potential cause for disaster. They demand £2000 from Del as he unknowingly bought some merchandise from them, however, Del had promised to give Rodney £2000 as a wedding present. Faced between disappointing his brother and taking a beating from the frightening hardmen. Del remains loyal to his family and tells Rodney to take the cash, while the old brother nurses his wounds in private.

The decision to take a beating, as well as keep it hidden from Rodney, demonstrates how much he values his younger brother. Without the threat of the fantastically played Driscoll brothers, the stakes wouldn’t have been the same.
