5. Soft Kitty Is A Real Song
Penny and Sheldon may have hugely popularised the tune as something to be sung when you are sick (or homesick, or injured and drugged, which are both a kindof sick) - but it has existed in various incarnations, with differing lyrics, for some time. 'Soft Kitty' is usually known as 'Warm Kitty', the lyrics to which were written by an Edith Newlin in the 1930s. Information varies as to the source of the tune. It may have been adapted from an old children's folk song called 'Little Bird'; another possible origin is that of a 19th century Polish lullaby about kittens on a fence. 'Soft Kitty' / 'Warm Kitty' is particularly well known in Australia, where it has appeared on nursery rhyme compilations and various children's shows.
