11 Great Things You Only Notice Rewatching Deadwood
9. 'Wild Bill' & 'Calamity Jane'
For all the creative license the show takes in its portrayal of the real-life town of Deadwood, it can be at times more authentic than the first-hand accounts ever were. One example of this was the relationship between 'Wild Bill' Hickok and 'Calamity Jane', which was considered an embellishment by Jane by modern historians.
The two Wild West icons being likely no more than acquantinces and Jane's account of their friendship are both seen in the show - with Bill regarding Jane as a zealous fan and Jane referring to Bill as her friend after his death for the remainder of the show.
