11 Things You Didn't Know About Stephen Colbert
1. He Briefly Worked For Good Morning America
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFlSNzanPXMAfter the cancellation of The Dana Carvey Show, Colbert was desperately seeking work, and so he took a job as a correspondent for Good Morning America. Yes, although he would soon go on to mock news correspondents on The Daily Show, for a very brief period of time, he was a real one.
His time at Good Morning America was a total disaster: Colbert pitched 25 pieces in a row and they were all shot down. He was only able to get one single story on the air before being fired. You can watch that story on YouTube, and it's kind of baffling seeing as it looks like an early Daily Show segment Colbert would have done, except he's actually being serious. It's like some sort of weird alternate dimension.
After being let go by GMA, Colbert was given a chance to be a "correspondent" for The Daily Show, his major break into the industry. He'd go on to become by far the most popular Daily Show correspondent ever to the point that he was given a spinoff, and now he's headed to CBS to host one of the biggest talk shows in the world. In retrospect, thank God he completely screwed up his Good Morning America gig, or The Late Show With Stephen Colbert may have never happened. Hooray for failure!
