Besides the fact that Beverly was a breeder, these two had quite a bit to enrage each other over. First there was their immediate sexual chemistry which butted against the fact that Picard practically left Bev’s possibly hysterical husband, Jack, to die on a mission.

Wesley Crusher never really got over his father’s death and initially resented the captain for his role in it. The scenario was even the basis of his Starfleet Psych Test in the episode Coming of Age.

Picard’s callous utilitarianism was also the cause of quite a few heated ethical disputes with the fiery redheaded doctor who was always keen to deliver aid and comfort in even the most hostile environments and sticky situations. Watching the two argue the ramifications of drug addiction and the Prime Directive in Symbiosis is one of their better sparing matches.
