11 TV Moments Everyone Was Waiting For (That Never Happened)

4. Audrey Horne & Dale Cooper - Twin Peaks

Over two seasons of David Lynch's opus, Audrey Horne was the femme fatale to Dale Cooper's cherry-pie-eating, damn-fine-coffee-drinking, purely good detective, and the chemistry between the pair was sizzling. Some people may have questioned the age gap, although it was never that great nor explicit, but in Season 1 especially there were clear signs of a romance building between the pair, and their storyline, like both characters, became a fan-favourite part of the show.

It was shelved in Season 2, however, for reasons that Sherilyn Fenn believes were more to do with who Kyle MacLachlan was dating in real life rather than anything narrative, and Heather Graham was instead brought in as Cooper's new love interest, Annie.

With Twin Peaks: The Return, then, it was the chance to finally bring them together. The show didn't actually give us either of them at first, building and building until we were desperate for the real Cooper and to discover what happened to Audrey. But while Coop's grand return - "I am the FBI" - was an event in itself, Audrey's ultimate fate was more confounding. Trapped in a loveless marriage, the last we saw was her dance, and her path never again crossed with Cooper's, denying us the chance for a happy ending to what would've been an ultimate slow-burn love story, or even just a final, bittersweet reunion.
