4. Lost Smoke Monster (Season 3, Episode 5)
This one seems obvious and yet to be honest is another difficult one to pin point, its like Heroes; there are so many potential sharks that you are almost spoilt for choice. People get defensive about Lost by saying that, unlike Heroes, Lost was always pre-planned to have the weird and wonderful back story to it (Heroes had lots of last minute plot changes). This in my opinion though doesnt absolve Lost writers, it makes me wonder what kind of grass they are smoking; to sit around and come up with everything that made up Lost and think Yeah that will work from day one must either be in some drug induced coma or literally be so lame at their job they resorted to throwing darts at an idea board. Now I will admit that I never watched Lost and dont have any intention of watching it anytime soon (I never say never) so feel free to rip me apart for that divulgence but let me explain why I havent. The first season I missed purely by accident, I didnt have Sky or cable at the time and at the time Netflix, Love Film and Hulu were not options available to me. I did intend to catch up but then before you knew it Season 2 rolled around and when I heard what was happening in Season 2 I almost did a double take thinking this IS the same program right? It went from being a dramatised reality show to an episode from the original series of Star Trek, especially when you reach our Shark Jump; the evil smoke monster! You got to be honest, a show as wacky and messy as Lost, if you have fans that have stuck with you up until this point and then you do something where they literally go Thats it Im done! then you really must have dropped the ball, either that or maybe Lost was just one big experiment to see just how far fans would go with the franchise, in which case hats off to you sirs! In any case, I digress, in S3E5 of Lost we have Mr. Eko (or something like that) being killed by some strange smoke deviant who we later find out to be a middle aged guy in the last season (?!?!?). Yep thats it, thats the moment that people thought OK you have gone too far. However to Losts credit they managed to churn out another few seasons after that so even though the common majority seem to believe that to be the Shark Jumping moment it did last long enough to wrap up franchise, kind of like putting a bow on a pile of dog turd but who am I to judge?
