12 Best 2000s TV Dramas We've All Been Glued To

11. Sherlock (2010)

The massively popular show about one of literature's most famous detectives also happens to be a fantastic series from creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Each season of Sherlock is comprised of three 90 minute episodes. This allows the writers to craft a compelling mystery for each episode that has enough time to breathe. As a result, the production values are off the charts and the plotting is intricate and complex. The episodes feel more like refined feature films than television episodes. Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, who in this show's incarnation is a self-labeled "high-functioning sociopath," is outstanding, and Martin Freeman is equally gripping as Dr. John Watson, Sherlock's partner in crime-solving. They are one of TV's most dynamic duos. The writing is creative, the dialogue is rapid-fire and biting, and the look of the show is very distinctive. Sherlock and John never cease to amuse with a sarcastic and sometimes mocking brand of humor. Sherlock also uses Heavy Rain-esque textual graphics on screen as Sherlock analyses every microscopic detail at amazing speeds. This helps the audience get a feel for Sherlock's sometimes dizzying mental capabilities. The show also features a fantastically memorable score by David Arnold. Be sure to watch this polished series to find out what enigma Sherlock will solve next.
