Everyone just wants Hershel to be their dad/grandad. He was a conflicted, stubborn character at times, but he had a genuine, caring heart and his death was utterly devastating to watch, especially seeing how brutal it was for such a gentle man. Scott Wilson was already off to a winner with the perfect look for Hershel's character, and gave a great performance during his spell. He also had to contend with his character's amputated leg in the show, including the brutal removal scene which was said to have been almost as terrifying as if it were actually happening.
